How to keep a password safe
Save passwords safely, avoid fake login pages, and know what to do if someone gets your password.
Making a strong password is only the first step. You also need to save it safely, enter it on the right website, and act quickly if you think someone else has it.
Save it somewhere safe
A password manager is usually the easiest place to save a new password. Be careful with copied passwords, downloads, screenshots, and printouts because they may stay on your device after you clear this page. Do not let an urgent email or text rush you into signing in. When something feels off, open the company’s app or type its web address yourself.
If you think someone has your password
Open the company’s official app or website and change the password from a device you trust. Sign out of other sessions if that option is available. Check that the recovery email address and phone number still belong to you, then turn on two-step verification or a passkey when the account offers it. If you reused the password, change it on those other accounts too, starting with email, banking, shopping, and social media.
The password strength checker can point out common patterns, but it cannot tell whether a password has been stolen. Test a made-up password with a similar shape instead of entering one you currently use.
